Common Household Appliances That Break Down Way Too Often

Alex CareyBy Alex CareyDecember 12, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Appliances make our lives easier, but they will break down and need repairs. They also need regular maintenance like cleaning. Knowing the difference between home warranty and home insurance is important because a home warranty can cover kitchen appliances whereas your insurance cannot.

For example, if you have a garbage disposal, don’t put in anything that swells or absorbs water, like rice. This can cause it to clog and explode. Other common maintenance issues include:

    1. Refrigerator

Refrigerators and freezers allow us to preserve food and drinks at their appropriate temperatures, extending their shelf lives or ensuring that foods are fresh for immediate consumption. However, they can also be a major biohazard when they break down and are left unattended. In fact, refrigerators are the appliance most commonly reported in claims to StrikeCheck (the independent consumer investigations division of GE) and are among the leading causes of home insurance claims for damaged appliances. A few simple maintenance tips can help extend the lifespan of your fridge. For example, vacuuming condenser coils every six months helps them dissipate heat properly and prevent breakdowns. Also, replacing the refrigerator water filter is an inexpensive way to improve performance and ensure safe drinking water. (Credit: SF Gate).

Whether it’s for food safety or convenience, refrigeration is an indispensable household appliance that should be kept in good working condition at all times.

    2. Washing Machine

The washing machine is the most frequently used appliance in most homes. It automates the wash process, making it less laborious and hygienic than washing clothes by hand. It is a great convenience, but it can be a source of frustration when it breaks down.

Like all appliances, it needs regular maintenance. You can keep your washer running smoothly by cleaning the lint filter and water filters regularly. You should also wipe down the rubber gasket every now and then to prevent mold from forming. You can also minimize breakdowns by using the right settings on your machine. Lastly, you should ensure that your washer is not too heavily loaded. This will increase its lifespan and reduce the likelihood of breakdowns. For the best results, always use a quality detergent and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

    3. Dishwasher

When it comes to household appliances, it’s almost guaranteed that they will break down at one point or another. This is due to the fact that they are often used heavily, and there is only so much that they can handle.

Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this from happening. By taking proper care of your appliances and regularly cleaning them, you can extend their lifespans and

    reduce the likelihood of breakdowns.

If you want to keep your appliances running smoothly, you should also avoid overusing them in the summer as they will be working extra hard. This will help you to save on energy and money in the long run. In addition, you can shop online for appliance parts from sites such as Appliance Parts Pros, PartSelect or Ziperone.

    4. Range

The most popular kitchen appliance in American homes is a range. However, there are many variations and some confusion as to what exactly this appliance is, especially if you’re new to home appliances or shopping for one.

To clarify, a range is an all-in-one kitchen appliance that combines both an oven and stove. It may be gas, electric or dual-fuel and comes in a variety of sizes and styles. Stoves exist independently of ranges and are a more traditional option for cooking appliances that existed before the modern kitchen. They can be paired with separate wall ovens or cooktops.

When it comes to shopping for a new range or stove, understanding the difference between these three kitchen appliances will help you make an informed decision about which one is right for your needs.

    5. Microwave

While microwaves might look like simple boxes, they are actually pretty complicated devices. Their small motors have very specific requirements and can be difficult to fix. Plus, you can get electrocuted trying to take one apart!

Taking your microwave to an appliance repair service is the safest option. Especially if you can’t figure out what’s going on.

If it’s rattling or making other weird noises, that could indicate a serious issue with the motor or electrical wiring. It could cause sparks or even a fire. And you definitely don’t want to risk that!
